The first few months of motherhood felt like a fog to me. If you asked my husband about what he remembers from it, I’m pretty sure his response will be a smile and he’ll say, “I don’t remember anything that happened!” Nights and days seemed to mesh into one.
Hungry? Okay, milk is coming! Uncomfortable? Okay, let’s figure out why! Tired? Okay, we’ll pat you to sleep! (The one thing my baby never fussed about was dirty diapers. She just didn’t!) Still crying? Okay, we’re clueless…but we’ll hold you till you stop!
It was exhausting.
But exhausting, a big YES too.

So when we finally settled into a better routine and rhythm for our lives after the third month, I knew I had to slowly find ways to take better care of myself because I was so drained from motherhood. It was clear to me that I was losing my cool more often than I liked, and it was simply because I had nothing left to give.

Self-care for Mums
Becky from Mommy Takes 5 has just launched her ebook: “The Self Care Journey: Finding Time for YOU in the Chaos of Motherhood” and I was nodding along as I read. Self-care is such an integral aspect of motherhood because it’s true – it can be really chaotic, especially in the first few months.
I resonated with her sharing on desiring the “old me”. It is easy to lose sight of who we once were when we become Mums. Suddenly, everything we do revolves around the child, and we put too much emphasis on caring for our family that we forget who God made us be. You are a whole person. With likes and dislikes, with hobbies and passions, with strengths and weaknesses, dreams and goals.
This book launches tomorrow, and you can get it HERE! It inspires you with a concrete plan to carve out just 5 minutes a day to do something for yourself – to fill up your tank before pouring out to others. Of course, if you can afford to do it for more than 5 minutes, all the better. But the key is to have this as a guideline, not as a must-do.
The most important thing is to simply take a break.
In it, she provides a printable where you can plan for 10 days at a time – little activities to nourish your soul. It challenges you to do things out of your comfort zone, especially since we may not be used to being so intentional with self-care. Becky also deals with Mum guilt in a very direct and encouraging way, and I’m inclined to agree – we really need to let go of that guilt and remember we are precious in His sight and need to be taken care of too.
The book divides self-care into 5 categories: physical, emotional, spiritual, people (ie. support system) and lifestyle. I tried out this journey for myself and found it helpful in making sure I slow down for a breather. Sipping on warm tea and reading a good book is one of my favourite ways to start the morning right.
The journalling section includes a few sentences of encouragement each day to give you a quick shift in perspective. It is not a lot of work, which means it is rather easy to complete. This is good since we are all having full, full days. 🙂
Overall, this is an easy read like a friend chatting with you over coffee, reminding you on taking care of yourself. The journal and self-care suggestions are what will make the most difference for your journey in self-care.
